History of Madison, Mississippi
Madison, MS, was originally a small farming village that had the distinction of being named after the fourth President of the United States, James Madison. In 1856, Illinois Central Railroad built Madison Station. The railroad station became a hub for commerce and Madison flourished. Residents of other towns nearby and people from up north, began to move into the area to be close to the railroad and part of a prospering community.

The siege of Jackson, MS, in 1861 almost led to the demise of Madison Station. But, at the end of the Civil War, Madison Station was rebuilt and the village once again prospered. By 1897, Madison had grown so much that it was incorporated as the Village of Madison. With both commercial and residential expansion, the Village of Madison was reclassified as the City of Madison in 1985. Growth continues today as more people discover this attractive city with a friendly hometown atmosphere.
