They indulge in homemade bratwurst, shish kabobs, homemade sauerkraut, German pastries, pretzels and, of course, German beer and wine. There is dancing, music with the sounds of tubas and other instruments, and singing. The children enjoy face painting, wagon rides, games, and many outdoor activities. Transportation
Canton is just a short 5 mile drive north on state highway 51. Madison and Jackson are no more than 22 miles south on I-55. Most residents commute to work by car. If you need to travel by air, the Jackson-Evers International Airport is in Jackson. Or if you prefer a more scenic ride, you might choose to take the AMTRAK train out of Jackson.

History of Gluckstadt Mississippi
Native American Indians were the area's earliest inhabitants. On June 17, 1905 a group of five German farmers from Indiana settled in the area. They decided to name their new Village Gluckstadt, which means “Lucky Village” in German. That fall more families arrived by train to help build homes and settle in for the winter.

Since the original settlers were of Catholic persuasion, they met in individual homes to worship until Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church was built in 1917. In the early years, village life centered around Saint Joseph’s church activities. Later, bad luck struck and the original church burned to the ground.

Saint Joseph’s was rebuilt and dedicated in June, 1929. Today, the church has a membership of about 120 families. The annual Germanfest is one of the church’s annual fundraisers.

Today, Gluckstadt is an unincorporated village, but it continues to enjoy growth as more residents choose a simpler lifestyle and more affordable housing.
