History of Flowood
Mississippi
Flowood’s earliest inhabitants were Indians and
early American settlers who planted their crops
along the fertile banks of the Pearl River. In
1951 a small group of locals decided to start
the town of Flowood and by 1953 the town was
chartered. Over the years the Pearl River caused
several floods throughout the community. The big
flood of 1962 was the impetus for the new levees
to be built. As the town progressed, it was
incorporated as the City of Flowood,
Mississippi, in 1990. As Flowood continues to
grow, it’s no wonder more rural real estate in
Mississippi homes are being built to accommodate
the influx of new residents.
