History of Florence
Mississippi
In the early 1820's, the community was first
called “Steen’s Creek” after the Steen family.
As the town grew, more merchants moved into
town. It later became a thriving cotton center.
By 1900, the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad
decided to run their line through Steen’s Creek.
W. Ellis made a bargain with the railroad by
offering some of his land in exchange for a
promise to name the Depot after his wife,
“Florence.” Thus Florence got its name.
The trains brought new residents, merchants and
industry to Florence. In May 1905 the town was
incorporated. In 1970, Florence was annexed into
the growing corporate city limits of Jackson.
Today, people are moving to Florence as they
strive to find a more leisurely lifestyle in a
quiet, rural setting away from the large
bustling city of Jackson.
