History of Brandon
Mississippi
Long before the early American settlers arrived,
this area was home to native Indian tribes. As
early settlers found their way into what is now
Brandon, many stayed to farm the rich fertile
land. They also set up logging operations to
profit from the abundance of trees.
Brandon, like many other southern towns, did not
escape the wrath and devastation of the Civil
War. The town was occupied by General Sherman
and his northern troops. During their
occupation, the troops pillaged and burned most
of the town to the ground including private
farms and homes. After the war, the town was
slowly rebuilt and began to grow as people came
through the area and decided to stay. In 1829,
Brandon was named after its own native born
resident, Governor Gerard C. Brandon.
Brandon has a long history of educating many
professionals including a large number of
Mississippi governors, congressmen, lawyers,
judges, doctors, nurses and teachers.
