    Through art, artifacts and photography, the work, lifestyle and artistic contributions of African Americans are celebrated, evoking a greater understanding of the African American experience in the Deep South. The museum is housed in the former Smith Robertson School, the first public school built for African Americans in Jackson. The school opened in 1894 and served the African American community until 1971.
  • Old Capitol Museum

    The Mississippi State House was first used in January 1839 for a special session of the legislature, although the interior of the building was not completed until the fall of 1840. After sixty-four years as the seat of state government, the building was abandoned in 1903 when the New Capitol was built to provide more space for an expanding government.

  • Fall Scarecrow Festival - Madison
    The Scarecrow Festival is a citywide Scarecrow contest and celebration that welcomes fall. This competition draws entries from hundreds of classroom pupils, area businesses and churches. It is a cornucopia of good business, community fellowship and creative education.

    One of the oldest craft festivals in the southeast. It's held annually the first weekend in December at the Mississippi Trade Mart.

    Kicking off in the state capital of Jackson the Dixie National Rodeo runs for 24 days at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds. Champion cowboys from all over the world compete for big jackpots. The best of the best of bull fighters, ropers, rodeo clowns, barrel racers and bull-doggers come out in droves and keep crowds entertained with fast-paced action and antics.
  • Ridgeland Floating Christmas Parade
    Celebrate the Christmas season by watching the lights of the Ridgeland Floating Christmas Parade dance across the water of the Ross Barnett Reservoir. You may view the parade from Old Trace Park on the Saturday following the Christmas Parade at 6:00 pm.

Parks & Recreation

  • Ross Barnett Reservoir
    Madison County is home to this 33,000 acre reservoir that covers 40 parks and recreation areas and is conveniently located just east of the city of Madison. Madison real estate owners will find a host of activities to engage in including boating, water sports and fishing. The reservoir is well stocked so take your rod and reel and pull in a big catfish or a good-eating crappie. Besides water activities, you can go biking, hiking, take the family for a picnic, go camping at Timber Lake Campground, or meander along the nature trails and watch the wildlife. If you enjoy ‘birding’ you’ll want to be sure and bring your binoculars. There are many more nearby reservoirs including Culley Lake, Lake Caroline and Lake Castle where you can boat and fish.
