contributions of African Americans are

Deep South. The museum is housed in the
former Smith Robertson School, the first
public school built for African Americans in
Jackson. The school opened in 1894 and
served the African American community until
1971.

The Mississippi State House was first
used in January 1839 for a special session
of the legislature, although the interior of
the building was not completed until the
fall of 1840. After sixty-four years as the
seat of state government, the building was
abandoned in 1903 when the New Capitol was
built to provide more space for an expanding

droves and keep crowds entertained with
fast-paced action and antics.

water of the Ross Barnett Reservoir. You may

Ross Barnett Reservoir
Madison County is home to this 33,000
acre reservoir that covers 40 parks and
recreation areas and is conveniently located
just east of the city of Madison. Madison
real estate owners will find a host of
activities to engage in including boating,
water sports and fishing. The reservoir is
well stocked so take your rod and reel and
pull in a big catfish or a good-eating
crappie. Besides water activities, you can
go biking, hiking, take the family for a
picnic, go camping at Timber Lake
